A new law, imposed by the Americans, could stop century-old traditions of seed-saving in Iraq.
Order 81 protects the rights of “owners” of seeds that can be proved to be “new, distinct, uniform and stable”.
Iraqi farmers are forbidden to save and replant such seeds.
Critics say the new law will lock farmers into buying new seeds in every year from big agricultural companies, and opens the door for GE crops in Iraq.
