A win for submitters

Public submissions have helped sway the Government into ratifying the Biosafety Protocol.
Nearly 1200 submissions, mostly favourable, were sent in. More than 800 were sent from the Greenpeace site (some by 90 degrees readers – so pat yourselves on the back).
Environment Minister Marian Hobbs said the Government had decided to ratify the protocol because “New Zealand is a good international citizen and we are committed to comprehensive biosecurity”.
The protocol will cover living GMO’s (genetically modified/engineered organisms) such as seeds, animals and grains, but not processed foods.
It is seen as ground-breaking because it gives countries some authority to turn away GE imports without having to scientifically prove that they are harmful.
